Software Engineer
Glasgow, Scotland

The company is based in Glasgow with test facilities at West Freugh in the south-west of Scotland.

Job Description:

We are looking for a software developer with experience of autonomous systems or robotics. This is a rare opportunity to work on a distinctive R&D project developing a significant new wind energy technology.

You will be extending and enhancing our existing control software which provides the “autopilot” functions for our kites. This will involve working on our bespoke simulation environment to test and develop control systems offline, and interacting with the hardware team to have the system running on a real, 500kW capacity generator system.

You will join our software development team primarily working in Glasgow, but will need to be willing to travel to the test site in West Freugh to assist with deploying your code into the real testing environment on occasion.

Role:

The primary job responsibilities are

  • Developing and improving control algorithms that automate the system.
  • Evaluating feedback from real world tests of your code.
  • Analysing data from real and simulated tests.
  • Assisting the hardware and aerodynamics development teams by providing and analysing simulation data.
  • Scientific analysis of the energy production capabilities of the system.
  • Interacting with the test team to get software changes working in the field on prototype hardware, and debugging issues that may arise.

Key Skills:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Maths, Physics or similar.
  • Specific qualifications in robotics, avionics or autonomous control systems highly desirable, including a Masters or PhD in relevant area.
  • Knowledge of either Java or Scala is essential.
  • Experience with Python and C++ helpful.
  • Comfortable with good coding practices (e.g. using version control, bug database, writing documentation).
  • Can use Linux command line and perform basic administration tasks.
  • Scientific analysis in MATLAB, Python+Numpy, R, or similar tools.

Relevant Experience

You will need to be capable of developing an autonomous system to work in the real world. Ideal experience would be with autonomous robots or drones, or AI programming in physically realistic environments (e.g. simulators, physically realistic games).

Good general mathematical skills will be very beneficial. In particular some experience with computer simulation of physical systems is desired (e.g. use of a physics engine, robotics simulator or using numerical methods in scientific computing), and a decent understanding of differential equations.

Knowledge or experience integrating software with real hardware will also be helpful.

Salary: £30-40 000 - depending on experience

Starting: From January (negotiable)
