Control and Simulation Engineer

 

Location

Job Description

Kite Power Systems are recruiting a Control and Simulation Engineer to join the Flight Sciences team.  The successful applicant would work closely with the aerodynamics, electrical and systems engineers to develop the control features and algorithms needed for robust autonomous flight.  The role would suit someone with at least 5 years’ experience in engineering, computer science, or robotics and is looking for a rare opportunity to work on a distinctive R&D project with excellent long-term potential.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Development and testing of autopilot control law algorithms
  • Analysis of flight test data and issuing of high quality test reports
  • Producing documentation and engineering reports
  • Seek continual improvement of KPS’ simulation models
  • Working closely with a multi-disciplinary team

Required Skills

  • Degree in engineering, computer science or robotics (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience in control law development and data analysis
  • Excellent English communication skills – verbal and written
  • Ability to quickly integrate into a multidisciplinary team

Desired Skills

  • Experience with development on embedded systems e.g. drones or Internet of Things
  • Experience with Linux and version control tools
  • Experience writing abstraction code for hardware/software interfaces

Job Description

Kite Power Systems are recruiting a Senior Mechanical Engineer as Head of Ground Systems within the KPS Engineering Team.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and delivery of various systems which make up Ground Systems, including the winch, drivetrain, slewing platform, and electrical generating station.  The Head of Ground Systems will bring significant experience of designing industrial platforms, as well as extensive practical knowledge, and will integrate this into a multidisciplinary team.  This is a rare opportunity to work on a distinctive R&D project developing a significant new wind energy technology.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Management of the KPS Ground Systems team
  • Leading the innovative design and upgrading of all KPS ground systems including the winch, drivetrain, and slewing platform
  • Sign-off responsibility to show legal compliance for ground systems
  • Lead the development of commissioning plans for ground systems
  • Lead structural analysis of design
  • Lead future concept and detailed design processes for Ground Systems
  • Incorporate CDM from the early stages of designs
  • Establish design load cases
  • Lead comparison and selection of materials and build methods for Ground Systems
  • Producing detailed engineering reports
  • Preparation of 3D and 2D drawings
  • Working closely with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Liaising with manufacturers & subcontractors

Required Skills

  • Degree in mechanical engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience working in a relevant field
  • Currently holds Chartered Engineer status
  • Has significant practical experience and can mentor junior members of staff
  • Thorough knowledge of, and experience working under, UK legal requirements including CDM, Machinery Directive, Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR)
  • Has previously acted as sign-off on mechanical designs
  • Experience working in SOLIDWORKS or similar package
  • Has designed for manufacture
  • In depth knowledge of mechanical and electrical (LV and MV) systems
  • Experience leading design teams and reporting progress
  • Excellent English communication skills – verbal and written
  • Ability to quickly integrate into a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience liaising with supply chain

Desired Skills

  • Experience of establishing design load cases and familiarity with IEC-61400 (or equivalent) codes
  • Experience in design, production, and commissioning of industrial hydraulic systems
  • Recognised competence based qualification in hydraulic engineering, or other relevant hydraulics qualifications and experience
  • Good knowledge of analysis packages including Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Kite Power Systems are recruiting an experienced Composites Structural Engineer to work within the KPS Engineering team.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the structural design of the KPS kite system and will work closely with aerodynamics, electrical, and systems engineers to deliver a unique high performance & lightweight kite.  The successful candidate will also take a lead on material and build method research for future designs.  This is a rare opportunity to work on a distinctive R&D project developing a significant new wind energy technology.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Design of kite structure using composite material technology
  • Structural analysis of the kite
  • Comparison and selection of materials and joining methods
  • Preparation of 3D and 2D drawings
  • Producing detailed engineering reports
  • Working closely with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Liaising with manufacturers & subcontractors
  • Maintaining parts lists, design records, Bills of Materials etc

Required Skills

  • Degree in mechanical or aeronautical engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience working in a similar environment
  • Significant experience designing lightweight composite structures
  • Excellent knowledge of engineering analysis techniques including Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Experience of using appropriate design codes, such as IEC 614000 or EASA CS-23
  • Experience working in SOLIDWORKS or a similar package
  • Ability to run research programmes looking at materials and build methods
  • Ability to develop test programmes to show compliance with design requirements

This is a rare opportunity to work on a distinctive R&D project developing a significant new wind energy technology.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Providing the primary electrical design resource and sign-off within the KPS Engineering team
  • Selection of equipment and sensors from specifications and incorporation into design
  • Producing and maintaining detailed electrical drawings
  • Electrical fault finding
  • Producing detailed engineering reports
  • Assisting in hardware/software interfaces
  • Working closely with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Liaising with manufacturers & subcontractors

Required Skills

  • HND/Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience working in a relevant field
  • Has held electrical sign-off responsibilities in a previous role

  • Extensive practical experience working on prototypes
  • Good knowledge of electrical loads analysis
