According to the Global Wind Energy Council, the installed capacity of conventional horizontal axis wind technology in 2014 globally was:

Floating Offshore Wind

Key advantages of the KPS floating 3MW systems are:

  • The KPS philosophy results in a substantially lighter and lower cost offshore system than a Wind Turbine:
    • The KPS system can be deployed in water deeper than 60m where even greater cost savings will be realised
    • Loads are taken in tension, not bending, reducing the structural material requirements
    • The drive train is higher speed and lower torque. hence more cost-effective
    • The kites are higher in sky where there’s a more constant wind and a lower visual impact
    • Kites have a much lower overall system mass, with resulting lower foundation loads
    • The working components are at a lower height, thus they are easier to access reducing regular maintenance costs and risk to personnel
    • The whole system can be disconnected and towed back to shore for major maintenance
    • Common workboats can install the systems instead of special installation vessels necessary for conventional wind turbines
  • The KPS offshore solution opens up global deep water markets that are as yet untouched by conventional offshore wind. For example Korea and Japan are amongst many new deep water market opportunities.
  • The requirement for Government subsidies could be removed: The LCOE for the KPS offshore arrays are 50% lower than the best projections for conventional offshore wind turbines.
  • The technology can be further scaled – ratings of 5MW plus will be achievable.
